Jesus was a Jewish itinerant preacher from Galilee who lived about 2,000 years ago. With a small group of disciples he travelled through the villages around the Sea of Galilee, spoke about the kingdom of God, love of neighbor and forgiveness, and became known for healings. For Christians he is the Son of God, in Judaism a teacher of his time, and in Islam a prophet. Historians widely agree that he existed.
He was probably born between 6 and 4 BC, before King Herod died in 4 BC. He grew up in Nazareth, worked mainly in Galilee and died in Jerusalem around AD 30. The region was under Roman rule at the time, governed by prefects such as Pontius Pilate and by client kings from Herod's family.
The main sources are the four Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, written roughly between AD 70 and 100. Even earlier are the letters of Paul from the 50s. Outside the Bible, he is mentioned by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus and the Roman historian Tacitus, who also records his execution under Pilate.
At the heart of his message was the coming kingdom of God. He told parables such as the prodigal son and the good Samaritan, turned to the poor, the sick and the outcast, and placed love of God and neighbor above everything else. The Sermon on the Mount, with the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer, remains one of the most influential texts in the world.
After his entry into Jerusalem, he came into conflict with the Temple leadership. Jesus was arrested at night, questioned by the Sanhedrin and handed over to Pontius Pilate. Crucifixion was a Roman form of execution for rebels and slaves. The inscription "King of the Jews" on the cross named the charge: he was seen as a threat to Roman order.
According to the Gospels, women found the tomb empty on the morning of the third day, and the disciples reported meeting the risen Jesus. Faith in the resurrection is the core of Christianity and the reason a small group of followers grew into a world religion. To this day, our calendar counts the years from his birth.
