World War II was the largest and deadliest conflict in human history. More than 60 countries took part, over 100 million people served in uniform, and an estimated 70 to 85 million people died – most of them civilians.
On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany. In Asia, Japan had already been at war with China since 1937.
The aftermath of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression and the rise of Nazism set the stage. Hitler's Germany rearmed, reoccupied the Rhineland in 1936, annexed Austria in 1938 and dismantled Czechoslovakia in 1939, while Britain and France pursued appeasement. The Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 1939 finally cleared the way for the invasion of Poland.
On one side were the Axis powers: Germany, Italy and Japan. On the other were the Allies, led by Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States and China. The Soviet Union joined the Allies after Germany invaded it in June 1941, and the United States entered the war after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
The war raged on the Western and Eastern Fronts in Europe, in North Africa, across the Atlantic, in the skies over Europe and throughout the Pacific. Key turning points include the Battle of Britain in 1940, Stalingrad in 1942–43, El Alamein in 1942, Midway in 1942 and the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
Nazi Germany murdered around six million European Jews, as well as hundreds of thousands of Roma and Sinti and many others. The Holocaust is the greatest crime of the war and an inseparable part of its history.
In Europe, the war ended with Germany's unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945. In the Pacific, Japan surrendered after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war; the formal surrender was signed on 2 September 1945.
The United Nations was founded in 1945, Europe was divided, and the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union began. Many of today's borders, alliances and institutions trace back to these six years.
